AUTHOR RIGHTS... CEREB PRESS
Cereb Press authors maintain their copyright as well as all other rights to their work. Authors may end their publishing
agreement at any time and for any reason. Authors may also search for traditional publishing contractswhile being published
through Cereb Press. Authors own and have full rights to the cover design and interior files created by Cereb Press to
publish the book.
|
AUTHOR RIGHTS... TRADITIONAL PUBLISHER
The author retains the copyright but assigns most, if not all, rights of use to the publisher. The publisher
typically retains publishing rights and secondary rights, indefinitely.
|
AUTHOR RIGHTS... SELF-PUBLISHING
SERVICE
The author usually retains copyright and all other rights, and can end the publishing agreement
at any time and for any reason. Some services keep the book cover and interior files or sell them to the author if the
author terminates the agreement.
|
|
TIME TO MARKET... CEREB PRESS
Cereb
Press typically brings a book to market within 6 to 8 months. This allows the time needed to gain pre-publication
reviews and exposure. Cereb Press can bring the author's book to market in as little as 3 months if the author is not
interested in reviews or pre-publication exposure.
|
TIME TO MARKET... TRADITIONAL
PUBLISHER
Books are usually brought to market within 2 years. Time for pre-publication reviews and advance
exposure is always allowed so that the book has a stronger, more credible introduction to the market.
|
TIME TO MARKET... SELF-PUBLISHING SERVICE
"Do-it-yourself" self-publishing services can
have the author's book to market almost as soon as the author's files are uploaded. Other self-publishing services
will have the author's book to market within 3 to 6 months.

ROYALTIES AND ADVANCES... CEREB PRESS
Cereb
Press authors are paid 100% net profit per book sold. Cereb Press does not pay in royalties because Cereb Press does
not take ANY percentage of sales (which is what a royalty truly is). Authors can earn anywhere from 2.00 (through wholesale
sales) to over 10.00 (through author direct sales) in net profit, per book sold.
No advances are paid.
|
ROYALTIES AND ADVANCES... TRADITIONAL
PUBLISHER
Authors average a 5% to 10% royalty per book sold. Because royalties are based on net profit and
other factors, authors typically earn less than a 1.00 to 1.50 royalty per book sold. Advances are usually given. The
size of the advance depends on the size and budget of the publisher. Advances are not "free money." An advance
is a prepayment to the author, based on the publisher's overall sales projections for the book. Authors will only begin
receiving royalty payments after royalties have exceeded the advance payment amount.
|
ROYALTIES AND ADVANCES... SELF-PUBLISHING SERVICE
Self-publishing services typically pay 20% to 35% in royalties.
The royalty percentage is usually based on the retail price of the book, but is sometimes based on net profit (profit after
cost). If the royalty is based on net, the author will receive less than the average royalty. Some of the "do-it-yourself"
self-publishing services will give the author a slightly higher royalty.
No advances are paid.

|
AUTHOR COST PER BOOK... CEREB PRESS
Cereb
Press authors pay a low, set-price per book (plus "at-cost" S&H). We do not
sell authors copies of their own books at a "discount" off the retail price. We do not insist on a minimum
order or charge any additional fees per order.
Authors are free to buy as few or as many books as they want. Authors
are free to sell their own books at any price, discount, terms, or conditions they choose.
|
AUTHOR COST PER BOOK... TRADITIONAL
PUBLISHER
Authors can usually purchase copies of their own books at a discount off retail or net. Some
traditional publishing companies limit the number of books the author can buy and restrict what the author can do with the
books.
|
AUTHOR COST PER BOOK... SELF-PUBLISHING SERVICE
Most self-publishing services sell author copies at a
discount off retail price, commonly 35% or lower. A small number of self-publishing services will sell author copies at a
set price that is often twice the self-publishing service's actual cost to print the book.
An extremely low
discount or extremely high set price per book prohibits the author from making any reasonable profit from direct or consignment
sales.

|
PUBLISHING OPTIONS... CEREB PRESS
Cereb
Press offers both digital (on-demand) publishing and offset publishing.
|
PUBLISHING OPTIONS... TRADITIONAL PUBLISHER
Traditional publishers offer both digital (on-demand) publishing and offset publishing - but typically
publish more books with offset technology than with on-demand technology.
|
PUBLISHING OPTIONS... SELF-PUBLISHING
SERVICE
Most offer only the digital (on-demand) publishing option.
|
BOOKSTORE RETURNS... CEREB PRESS
Cereb Press allows book returns in order
to get authors' books on the brick-and-mortar shelves. Cereb Press does not charge its authors a fee to designate books
as "returnable." While we strongly encourage all authors to allow book returns, Cereb Press gives authors the option
of designating their books as non-returnable.
Authors are responsible for the costs of returned books.
|
BOOKSTORE RETURNS... TRADITIONAL PUBLISHER
Allowing returns is standard
practice with traditional book publishers. Authors do not receive royalties on returned books and a "reserve against
returns" statement is often included in the publishers contract with the author. This means a certain percentage of author
royalties are held back to cover a projected number of returns.
|
BOOKSTORE RETURNS... SELF-PUBLISHING SERVICE
Most self-publishing services
do not designate their books as "returnable." If they do offer to designate an author's book as "returnable,"
the author pays a fee for that designation. The fee runs anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several hundred dollars and
the author is still responsible for the cost of returns.
|
WHOLESALE DISCOUNTING... CEREB PRESS
Cereb Press wholesale discounts authors
books at 50% to 55% off the retail price. This leaves the book retailer with a 35% to 40% discount off the retail price.
|
WHOLESALE DISCOUNTING... TRADITIONAL PUBLISHER
Generally, traditional publishers
offer a 55% to 65% wholesale discount off the retail price.
|
WHOLESALE DISCOUNTING... SELF-PUBLISHING SERVICE
Many, if not most, self-publishing
companies only offer a 20% to 35% wholesale discount off the retail price. This leaves the book retailer with as little as
a 5% to 20% discount off the retail price.
|
RETAIL PRICING... CEREB PRESS
Cereb Press allows authors to set their
own retail price for their books. We provide high and low price range recommendations that will keep the book competitive
in the market place - but the final retail pricing decisions are left with our authors. Because Cereb Press charges authors
a very low price for printing, authors can easily set a competitive retail price and still make a sizeable profit off sales.
|
RETAIL PRICING... TRADITIONAL PUBLISHER
Retail pricing is determined
by the publisher. The author typically receives a small percentage of the net profit as a royalty payment.
|
RETAIL PRICING... SELF-PUBLISHING SERVICE
Some self-publishing services
determine the retail price and some allow authors to set their own retail price. In many cases, self-publishing services keep
so much of the profit from sales (even sales to the author) that the authors are forced to set a high retail price to make
a dollar or two off sales. Sales are usually low to non-existent because the retail price is too high.
|
DISTRIBUTION... CEREB PRESS
Cereb Press books are wholesale distributed
through Ingram and Baker & Taylor so they will be available to all major and independent brick-and-mortar stores, as well
as online bookstores such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, Borders, Powells, Abe Books, and more.
|
DISTRIBUTION... TRADITIONAL PUBLISHER
Wholesale distribution is
provided through Ingram and various 3rd-party distribution companies.
|

self-publishing services offer wholesale distribution through Ingram and Baker & Taylor. BookSurge distribution is primarily
online through its parent company, Amazon.
